The new Royce and Pam Money Student Recreation and Wellness Center features two stories and 113,000 sq. ft. of gleaming new equipment, with broad windows looking out onto the campus.  The center is part of the expansion and renovation of Abilene Christian University’s (ACU) former Physical Education Center. The university took great measures to expand its wellness offerings for students, and to bring all on-campus wellness facilities, including the Medical Clinic and the Counseling Center, under one roof. The new center will also serve as home for offices and classrooms of the Department of Exercise Science and Health.

As a part of the newly enhanced wellness and recreation facilities, the design team of Counsilman-Hunsaker, The Tittle Luther Partnership and Marmon Mok renovated the existing six lane 25-yard competition pool which included entirely new mechanical systems.  The competition pool and support spaces were updated to maximize usability for a wide variety of programs, including the extremely popular intramural sport of “waterball” which is unique to this pool and campus.  Adjacent to the competition pool is a new 3,000 sq. ft. recreation pool. The goal for this pool was to offer a multitude of program, recreation, and socialization opportunities within a relatively compact aquatic footprint.

The aquatic program and amenities include:

3,400 sq. ft. Competition Pool

  • Six 25-yard fitness lap lanes
  • Depths ranging from 3.5 ft. to 12 ft.

3,000 sq. ft. Recreation Pool

  • Two 25-yard fitness lap lanes
  • Current Channel
  • Hydrotherapy bench seating
  • “Full-court” water basketball and water volleyball
  • Decorative spray feature
  • Open swim area
  • Two separate grand-stair entries
  • School logo in tile on pool floor
