Counsilman-Hunsaker, in association with Hastings & Chivetta Architects, designed the new 57,000 sq. ft. indoor/outdoor community recreation center for the City of Arnold, a suburban community outside St. Louis, Missouri. One of the design concepts incorporated for this municipal water facility was creating zones: an area for tots, one for teens, and buffering those two by a family zone.
The innovative 5,000 sq. ft. indoor aquatic center features a tubular waterslide that takes swimmers outside the building before splashing back into the indoor pool. Other features include four fitness lap lanes and a children's play feature.
The main visual attraction is the bowl slide, which offers exploratory riders a 32 ft. tower with a chance to shoot down a 95-lineal-foot water slide into a splash bowl, where they swirl around the funnel, then exit by a vertical drop of 37 ft. into a catch pool complete with exit stairs.
