California Maritime Academy Pool (Study)

Vallejo, CA

The California Maritime Academy Feasibility Study focused on an outdoor 50-meter pool for teaching aquatic survival skills, recreational activities, fitness swimming, aquatic sports training, and sanctioned competitions. The facility will be used by the students of the California Maritime Academy, as well as other local sport and recreation groups. Because of the relative ratios between the basic activity uses (instructional, training, and competition), program integration is the primary objective for this particular complex in creating a flexible facility.

Features included varying pool depth between 3 ft. 6 in. and 12 ft. 6 in.to accommodate shallow water programming as well as diving; the perimeter overflow system (gutter) incorporated a large capacity flume and a natural gradient to accommodate dynamic and static surges during swimming races, and fully recessed in order to accommodate the wave amplitude for training purposes; the decks around the pool would be sufficient to provide for foot traffic, temporary seating space, and adequate sight lines from the spectator area.

Because events will likely extend into darkness, overhead lights would provide down lighting with a brightness of at least 50 foot candles over the entire 50-meter by 25-yard pool, in addition to underwater lights. A 12-foot-high training platform would simulate the height of ship to practice entering the water in a variety of conditions.

To further support the training aspects of entering the water from a ship, a water agitation system would be capable of producing 8-inch-high waves for a period of five minutes.
