In the summer of 2007, the team of Counsilman-Hunsaker and Kimley-Horn & Associates were retained to assist with a Feasibility Study for improvements for the City of Baytown’s Wayne Gray Sports Complex, as well as NC Foote Park. The city had become increasingly concerned regarding the capacity and condition of its facilities and was interested in developing a strategy for facility improvements that would include an analysis of various combinations renovation and new construction for family aquatic centers. The Study aimed to provide Council and the community with a sound indication of how the current and future needs of the community can be met.
The report suggested the most economical solution was to build an addition to the Wayne Gray Sports Complex and replace the existing pool in NC Foote Park. The new 22,000 sq. ft. Pirates Bay Family Aquatic Center, located in the Gray Sports Complex was completed in May 2010, and the 5,700 sq. ft. new Calypso Cove Family Aquatic Center located in NC Foote Park, was completed in May 2011.
Calypso Cove offers a “zero-entry” pool, spray guns, water-crossing activities and covered picnic areas. It also features a three lane lap pool, a Caribbean-themed water play structure and an open-flume water slide.
