Counsilman-Hunsaker conducted a comprehensive aquatic facility audit to evaluate the existing swimming pool's condition and provide a cost assessment for restoring the facility to a “like-new” operational state. The audit included a visual inspection and incorporated feedback from facility personnel, while also accounting for potential unforeseen conditions that could arise during the renovation process. The final report prioritized renovation items both in the pool and in the mechanical room that were critical to keep the pool functional for years to come. It provided a detailed cost estimate addressing repairs, replacements, safety concerns, and code compliance as required by local authorities.
Following the audit’s recommendations, the school district approved renovating the 2,628 sq. ft., five-lane, 25-yard competition pool.
SCOPE OF RENOVATION
- Demolished the existing deep-end floor to accommodate a new 1-meter diving board by increasing the depth.
- Removed the existing perimeter gutter system and replaced it with a new stainless-steel gutter.
- Replaced the pool finish, starting blocks, diving board, rail goods, ADA lift, and timing system/scoreboard.
- Upgraded all pool mechanical equipment including pump, VFD, filters, heater, and chemical equipment.
CHALLENGES
One of the primary challenges was retrofitting the existing pool structure to meet current standards. The original deep end did not meet today’s required water depths for a 1-meter diving board, making compliance impossible without significant intervention. As a result, the deep end floor had to be demolished, lowered, and completely rebuilt. This modification introduced complex structural detailing and added a layer of difficulty to the construction process.
