Erie County Community College – The Burt Flickinger Center (Design and Audit)

Buffalo, NY

In 1993, Counsilman-Hunsaker, in collaboration HHL Architects, designed this state-of-the art athletic center for use as the 1993 World University Games swimming venue. Following the Games, it became the field house for Erie Community College. The Burt Flickinger Center houses a 50-meter by 25-yard pool and a 45 ft. by 25-yard warm up pool which serve as the home venue for Canisius men’s and women’s swimming and diving meets. The facility also includes three basketball courts and a suspended running track, a wellness center, a small gym for dance and martial arts, lockers, administrative offices, and six classrooms.

In 2019, Erie County Department of Public Works commissioned Counsilman-Hunsaker to provide a natatorium assessment of the two pools. One main concern was the operation of the moveable floor in the 50-meter pool; another was that the mechanical equipment was nearing the end of its useful life. A site visit was conducted to evaluate the existing facility and the respective mechanical systems and to report any areas of concern. Detailed notes, measurements, and pictures were taken to document all findings. Recommendations were made for renovation or replacement of pool systems including costs for any modifications, replacements, or additions required. This resulted in providing the college a complete perspective to make future planning decisions in aquatics. Additionally, following the analysis, an assessment report was prepared that outlined the findings. The final report included recommended improvements to resolve the concerns identified, including cost estimates.
