The Counsilman-Hunsaker and Kimley-Horn & Associates team were retained by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVPRA) to make recommendations for the expansion at Great Waves Waterpark. The number of visitors exceeds the current capacity of 1,400 guests per day leaving patrons waiting in long lines to enter the waterpark. This expansion is intended to meet the needs of the community to accommodate these additional patrons.
The team completed an onsite evaluation of the park and facilities, identified and analyzed various development constraints, completed an analysis of the waterpark visitation and revenues in recent years, and conducted a market study which included data on area waterparks and pool facilities that compete with Great Waves. The team also led a design charette with park staff to discuss and explore various new waterpark features and renovations.
The team presented three options with associated project costs for thrill rides which would add capacity and would attract the teenage demographic. Each concept emphasized recreational aquatics that could be phased in over time with consideration to admission and membership fees for both residents and non-residents. This information was finalized in a report with recommendations on the best options for redevelopment. After much consideration, the NVPRA made the decision to add the thrill ride “Master Blaster” to the site.
