The Maltz Special Warfare Aquatic Training Center, located at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Chapman Training Annex in Texas, supports the development and readiness of Air Force Special Warfare personnel through advanced aquatic training. The facility is named in honor of Master Sgt. Michael Maltz, a pararescueman in the U.S. Air Force who exemplified bravery and dedication to saving lives. Sgt. Maltz tragically lost his life on March 23, 2003, in Afghanistan when the rescue helicopter he was aboard crashed during a mission to save two injured children.
This 76,000-square-foot facility includes two enclosed, 50-meter, climate-controlled indoor swimming pools with varying depths and movable bulkheads, designed to accommodate the diverse training needs required for global combat operations. Suspended catwalks provide instructors with an elevated vantage point to observe aquatic drills, ensure safety, offer immediate feedback during high-intensity training, and facilitate exercises such as drops into the pool.
The aquatic training center also features classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, showers, medical spaces for treatment and rehabilitation, and a human performance center located in a central spine separating the two pools. Additionally, the facility is equipped with systems to simulate combat conditions, and large access doors allow for boat entry, further enhancing its versatility.
This one-of-a-kind facility serves as the training hub for candidates aspiring to join Air Force Special Warfare specialties, including Pararescue, Combat Control, Tactical Air Control Party, and Special Reconnaissance. It represents a transformative advancement in the Air Force's operational, academic, and physical fitness training capabilities.
