In 2016, Counsilman-Hunsaker was commissioned to prepare a workshop to reveal the examination of the condition of the pools at McMaster University. The condition of the facility and chronic overcrowding led to a discussion of renovation or replacement. Suggested new pools were outlined with costs and renderings. In another workshop, a masterplan discussed space allocation and utilization of the facility including a new building entry, fieldhouse and pools.
With major plans to renovate and improve the current competition pool on campus at McMaster University, the staff began the process of creating operating budgets and protocols to understand the long-term impact of a new aquatic center. In 2018, the university contracted Counsilman-Hunsaker to review the proposed renovation, provide recommendations on the usage and revenue stream, and create a facility-specific operating budget. Counsilman-Hunsaker also provided an economic impact analysis that evaluated the potential spending the local economy would experience due to large events hosted at the new aquatic complex.
