In October 2022, the City of Midland engaged Counsilman-Hunsaker to conduct a comprehensive conditions assessment of Plymouth Pool, a 50-meter outdoor facility with zero-depth beach entry and a deep end adjacent to six lap lanes. Constructed approximately 60 years ago, the pool underwent a significant renovation in 2006, during which the shallow water recreation area was replaced with the zero-depth entry, and a stainless steel gutter was installed around the pool's perimeter.
The assessment identified key issues related to the beach entry area and the stainless-steel gutter, including water loss and structural movement. Over the years, city staff have undertaken various repairs to address these challenges. Efforts included re-welding damaged sections of the gutter trough, replacing a failed gutter converter that had blown out beneath the deck, and lining the deteriorated cast iron piping to mitigate leaks.
To guide the city in planning the next phase of renovations, Counsilman-Hunsaker presented three options:
- Replacement-in-Kind: Replacing the existing stainless steel gutter with a similar system.
- Concrete Gutter Trough: Installing a new concrete gutter doweled into the existing pool walls.
- Myrtha RenovAction System: Constructing a new structure within the existing pool shell, complete with an integrated gutter system and updated finishes.
For all scenarios, the recommendations included replacing the pool’s recirculation equipment, installing a new surge tank, and reconstructing the zero-depth entry to address structural issues. Detailed cost estimates were provided for each option, equipping the city with the information needed to determine the best path forward for the pool’s future. Pleased with the audit's results, the city chose to renovate the facility. It will start in September 2024 and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.
