After completing programming exercises for four recreation facilities in the City of Calgary, Counsilman-Hunsaker was retained to provide design and engineering services for two new recreation centers for Quarry Park and Rocky Ridge.

The facilities were designed to serve the needs of both residents and employees from the surrounding communities. The center will act as a community hub to increase opportunities for community gatherings and social connections.

The Rocky Ridge facility is approximately 300,000 sq. ft. and sits in the middle of a natural park, featuring views of the mountains and surrounded by wetlands, nature trails and pathways. The facility features aquatics, leisure and sport ice rinks, a three-court gymnasium, a fitness center an open-concept self-service library, a 200-seat theater, an art studio and exhibition space.

Aquatic amenities include:

520 Square meter Competition Pool

  • Eight 25-meter lap lanes
  • Two 1-meter diving boards

18 Square meter Competition Spa

475 Square meter Leisure Pool

  • Waterslide runout

The Shane Homes YMCA is designed for LEED® Gold certification and employs several unique sustainable features. The facility is constructed with 2,750 m³ of glulam timber, significantly reducing its carbon impact, and equating to taking 725 cars off the road for or eliminating one year of CO2 emissions from 362 houses for one year. The Shane Homes YMCA includes a combined heat and power co-generation system, significantly reducing waste energy and greenhouse gas emissions by re-capturing waste heat for use in pools and domestic hot water and re-using gray water from the whirlpools to flush urinals and toilets.
