Counsilman-Hunsaker conducted a facility audit at Rosa Parks Middle School in Dixmoor, Illinois. The school’s swimming pool, a five-lane lap pool measuring 60 feet by 36 feet, had been closed since 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. At the time of closure, the pool was drained and had remained empty. The school sought an assessment to determine the steps required to reopen the facility.
Constructed in 1978-79, the pool features a concrete shell with a painted finish, a stainless-steel gutter, and a single main drain. Previously equipped with starting blocks and a diving board, these features had been removed over the years.
The audit recommendations included a full mechanical system renovation, encompassing a new pump pit, filter tank, recirculation pump, and exposed piping. It also advised creating a dedicated space for pool chemicals, refinishing the pool shell, passivating the stainless-steel gutter, and replacing the main drain cover to bring the pool up to current operational standards.
