The City of Santa Fe Springs retained Counsilman-Hunsaker to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Santa Fe Springs Aquatic Center, which had been closed for two years due to severe pool deterioration and mechanical system failures.
Originally opened in 1985, the Santa Fe Springs Bowl Aquatic Center includes a 25-meter by 25-yard, 10-lane outdoor competition pool and a 25-yard, 3-lane outdoor warm-up and instructional pool. The audit was commissioned to evaluate the scope of necessary repairs and provide the city with a strategic plan to reopen the facility and serve the community once again.
Counsilman-Hunsaker’s in-depth assessment uncovered critical deficiencies, including non-compliance with current industry standards and codes, significant equipment malfunctions, and structural concerns. Key findings included the need for pool replastering—typical for pools exceeding 30 years in age—and urgent repairs to the cantilever gutter system, which posed safety risks. The audit also identified extensive cracking and uneven surfaces on the pool deck, partly attributed to the region's seismic activity.
The facility’s mechanical systems, including filtration, heating, and chemical controllers, were deemed obsolete and needed to be replaced to meet modern operational efficiency standards. In addition to documenting these issues, Counsilman-Hunsaker provided the city with a detailed report, including an opinion of probable construction costs for the proposed repairs and upgrades.
Upon the audit's completion, the City of Santa Fe Springs retained Counsilman-Hunsaker to lead the design and implementation of the recommended repairs. The renovation, finalized in the spring of 2024, restored the aquatic center to a safe, functional, and compliant condition, enabling the community to benefit again from this vital recreational resource.
