Smith College retained Gund Partnership and Counsilman-Hunsaker to assess the physical condition of the existing Dalton Pool located in the Ainsworth Gym to determine the needs for the next ten years.
The assessment examined: 1) the pool, including all its mechanical and electrical systems; 2) the mechanical and electrical systems in the Ainsworth Gym, especially as they relate to the pool; and 3) the general condition of the building envelope. The consultant team developed a detailed program for a new aquatics center by seeking the vision of interested aquatics and athletics staff, reviewed scheduling data, and compiled benchmark data of relevant peer and aspirational institutions to inform the programming process.
Following the existing facility assessment, Counsilman-Hunsaker completed a feasibility study of a new aquatic center for Smith College. This three-tiered process began with a needs assessment where collegiate providers were assessed, local area demographics were studied, a site analysis was completed, and potential user groups were identified. The second step in the study process took a closer look at the facility program and space requirements. Three concepts were developed and analyzed, associated project costs and construction estimates were provided, and potential partnerships were identified. The third phase that finalized the feasibility study was the operations and business plan. To accompany all three concepts that were developed, full opinions of revenue, operating expenses, and cashflow were provided in detail.
