Counsilman-Hunsaker provided aquatic design and engineering services for the new 50,000 sq. ft. indoor aquatics center for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Ft. Bliss, Texas. The new $15.1 million facility will serve as soldier training space for water-based maneuvers and double as recreation space for soldiers and their families. Features of the aquatics center include: a competition pool; a deep water training tank used for diving and a variety of training exercises including drown-proofing, combat water survival, and other training for soldiers; a multi-purpose pool for recreational activities; 1,000 sq. ft. of training rooms and classrooms; and men’s and women’s locker rooms, spectator facilities and other various support spaces.

The new facility is meant to keep up with growth at Ft. Bliss and will be open to all active-duty, retired military families, as well as civilian employees. Features of the aquatics components include:

10,000 sq. ft. Competition Pool

  • Eight 50-meter lap lanes
  • Moveable bulkhead

3,000 sq. ft. Multi-Purpose Pool

  • Water basketball and water volleyball
  • Rockscape climbing wall
  • Waterfall features in shallow and deep water areas
  • Aqua arch featured in the zero-depth entry
  • Underwater bench seating
  • Designated area for underwater rescue training

1,100 sq. ft. Deep Water Training Tank

  • Two 1-meter springboards
  • 3-meter diving/training platform

The facility was designed and constructed for LEED Silver certification.
