The University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill commissioned Counsilman-Hunsaker to conduct a comprehensive swimming pool audit of the historic Kessing Pool, located behind Woolen Gymnasium. Designed originally in June 1942 and opened in 1943 as part of the Navy Aviation Eastern Pre-flight Training School, the pool served thousands of World War II Navy service members, including future U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. While significant renovations to the pool’s filtration, chemical treatment systems, and piping were completed in 2003, the audit was initiated to assess current conditions, identify any substandard elements, and recommend necessary repairs. Emphasizing user safety and sanitation, the audit evaluated the existing mechanical systems and explored future programming opportunities to align with the university’s vision for the pool.
