University of Miami – Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science

Miami, FL

The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is an academic and research institution for the study of oceanography and the atmospheric sciences within the University of Miami.

It is located on the school’s waterfront shoreline facing Biscayne Bay. It is the only subtropical applied and basic marine and atmospheric research institute in the continental United States.

As one of the few facilities of its kind in the nation, the new freshwater scientific dive training facility consists of a 75 ft. by 50 ft. (3,753 sq. ft.) diving tank with six lap lanes and has a. depth of 15 ft. It will expand the school’s capability in underwater research and education by training scientists and students with the necessary scientific diving skills and technology, in accordance with the American Academy of Underwater Sciences standards.

In addition to the core classes taught for scientific diving, the Rosenstiel School will be the first university to offer scientific freediving in accordance with the new PADI standards for scientific freediving as a research tool. Freediving has many applications to enhance underwater research activities such as experimental larvae research, coral outplanting, shark research, and marine mammal observations.
