The team of Counsilman-Hunsaker and Hastings & Chivetta Architects was commissioned to design an innovative aquatic facility for the University of Missouri - Columbia. The design objective was to create a resort-like “escape” for students - away from classes, studying, and exams.
Counsilman-Hunsaker heeded the school’s goals and objectives and designed an inviting complex, which includes indoor and outdoor leisure amenities. The ADA- accessible indoor leisure pool was designed around a tropical jungle theme.
- Aquatic features include:
- Open swim area
- Soothing waterfall
- ADA-accessible zero-depth entry
- Bubbling fountain
- Current channel
- Hidden grotto
- Haystack, small inlet allowing swimmers to surround themselves around hydrotherapy jets
- Oversized vortex
- State-of-the-art underwater sound system and drop-down screens for viewing movies or Mizzou sporting events
- Oversized spa
The outdoor leisure pool includes a ramp entry, waterfall, built-in benches, and whirlpool spa.
This facility is the largest recreation center ever built in the history of Missouri higher education; it has been recognized in several industry publications and has won multiple design awards.
