University of Northern Iowa – Student Recreation Center

Cedar Falls, IA

Planning for the Wellness/Recreation Center (WRC) began in the early 1990’s with ground breaking in May of 1995. As the idea of the Wellness and Recreation Center was developed by committees of students, faculty, staff, and administrators, the decision was made in 1996 to move the Campus Recreation program from the School of Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Services in Academic Affairs and merge it with the Wellness Promotion, in the Division of Student Affairs, to become Wellness and Recreation Services (WRS) within Health and Recreation Services.

The WRC was designed to wrap around the existing PEC on the north and east sides and serve as the primary academic building for the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Service and the primary hub for Wellness and Recreation Services offices, staff and programming. The WRC opened in August of 1997 with full completion by October of 1998.

Counsilman-Hunsaker designed the aquatic center which is the home of academic classes, open recreation lap swim, Swimming and Diving, and the Paddling Panther Learn to Swim Program.

Aquatic amenities include an indoor eight lane, 25-yard pool with two 1-meter and two 3-meter diving boards, as well as a leisure pool with waterslide, bubble couch, spray fountain, ramp entry and spa.
