Washington and Lee University – Natatorium

Lexington, VA

Founded in 1749 and the nation’s ninth oldest institution of higher education, Washington and Lee University is a private institution that was named for two men who played pivotal roles in the university’s history: George Washington and Robert E. Lee.

In 2014, the Board of Trustees approved planning for the replacement of the Cy Twombly Pool, which was experiencing mechanical failures and needed major repairs and renovation. In 2017, the new 44,000 sq. ft. natatorium was completed and contains a stretch 25 competition pool, locker rooms, a wet classroom and spectator seating, while allowing increased opportunities for swim team practice, physical education instruction and recreation.

The competition pool was designed with a deep-water configuration to allow for the future addition of diving. The facility includes:

9,700 sq. ft. Competition Pool

  • Six 25-yard warm-up lanes with 4 ft. depth
  • 4 ft. wide moveable bulkhead
  • Eight 25-yard lap pool with depths ranging from 5 ft. to 12 ft.
