William L. Welch Pool (Study)

State College, PA

The William L. Welch Community Swimming Pool Renewal Plan began with a 2009 Aquatic Feasibility Study, provided by Counsilman-Hunsaker. The swimming pool was enjoyed for its community atmosphere, but residents wanted the pool experience updated, to meet newer codes, to serve regional needs, to keep capital and operating costs reasonable for customers and the five municipalities it serves, and to cooperate with the State College Area School District for parking and land use. Moreover, residents wanted the Welch Community Swimming Pool to complement features at their other public pool, Park Forest Community Swimming Pool, (designed by CH) approximately 4.7 miles away.

The Welch pool went into design in 2009 and includes an eight lane 25-yard competition pool with two 1-meter diving boards, and a leisure pool with current channel, vortex, waterslides, zero entry with interactive play structure, alternate water features, and a sprayground attached to the north end of the leisure pool. The pool will offer lesson programming, competitive swimming and recreational swimming.
