In 2019, Derry Township retained Counsilman-Hunsaker to complete an aquatic study to determine the future of aquatics for the local community. The study's goal was to review the regional and statewide competitive swimming market and provide commentary, knowledge, and insight to the Township. Counsilman-Hunsaker provided the findings to allow the Township to make a well-informed decision about the number of competitive events a future aquatic center could host. Counsilman-Hunsaker's process included a needs analysis that evaluated the number, types, and sizes of competitive events, including participation levels, market rates, and other economic considerations. In addition, a financial analysis of competitive swimming events was conducted, which included projected revenue and usage.
Counsilman-Hunsaker further developed financial pro forma for five separate pool options, including indoor and outdoor recreational water, to build full projections for facility operations.
The final approved facility option was designed and subsequently opened in June 2022. It includes a 90,000 sq. ft. community center complete with an indoor 25-yard competition pool, an indoor leisure pool, an outdoor leisure pool, and an outdoor sprayground. The facility also includes a senior center, teen center, full-sized gymnasium, fitness center, and several multipurpose meeting/program rooms.
