In 2013, Counsilman-Hunsaker was retained by the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners to conduct an economic analysis for a new aquatic center which included the financial feasibility and projected economic impact. The report highlighted three options for consideration with estimated capital and operating costs.
Pleased with the results from the study, Buncombe County celebrated the grand opening of their new 17,300 sq. ft. aquatic center in 2018, located in Roberson High School, and replacing the over 50-year-old Zeugner Center pool. This facility is co-managed in partnership with the local YMCA and features a 10 lane, 25-meter by 25-yard competition pool. The center also includes seating for 420 spectators, a state-of-the-art timing and scoreboard system, UV water treatment system, and numerous energy efficient design features.
The pool was designed primarily as a competition pool for high school events. Accommodations were made for multi-purpose uses such as swim lessons, training programs, physical education, Masters swimming competitions, therapy, and other public and semi-public uses.
