The Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Brooklyn, Ltd. (FIAO) is a not-for-profit charitable community service organization. FIAO was created in 1977 by a group of community leaders who volunteered to work with youths in a recreational environment to serve as a positive influence. Services are provided by professionally trained counselors who bring youths into established FIAO programs which address their social, educational, and emotional needs.
In June 2016, the organization opened a new 50,000 sq. ft., six-story community center providing a new focal point for FIAO. It includes a gymnasium, swimming pool, fitness center, senior citizens center, a performing arts auditorium, and a rooftop garden. Counsilman-Hunsaker was the lead aquatic designer for the 1,500 sq. ft., four lane lap pool located on the 6th floor which offers a stunning panoramic view of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Verrazano Bridge.
