The design phase for a new four-story Student Recreation Center began in October 2015 with program input from students, staff, and the Student Advisory Committee. Opened in August 2019 and built from a $100 million project budget, the center conforms to Connecticut High Performance Building Code regulations and is slated to be registered as a LEED GOLD project. Key sustainability factors, including energy and water use, building materials, air and lighting quality, and occupant satisfaction, were used to achieve these standards.
The Student Recreation Center serves as the new campus hub for intramural sports, fitness and recreation. The 212,575 sq. ft building contains fitness areas, two swimming pools, multi-activity courts including volleyball and badminton, basketball and racquet ball courts, an indoor track, fitness studios, an indoor rock climbing wall, a juice bar, and supporting office spaces for the UConn Recreation Department.
