TMP Architects authorized by the Ann Arbor Public School, commissioned Counsilman-Hunsaker to provide an assessment of the five (5) middle school indoor pools across the Ann Arbor Public School district in 2020 and the three (3) high school indoor pools in 2023. Counsilman-Hunsaker conducted site visits to evaluate the existing facilities and their respective mechanical systems and to report any substandard areas in preparation for upcoming renovations to the pools and natatoria. Assessments were conducted of the pools at the following facilities:
- Clague Middle School
- Forsythe Middle School
- Scarlett Middle School
- Slauson Middle School
- Tappan Middle School
- Huron High School
- Pioneer High School
- Skyline High School
Sustainability is one of the school district’s primary priorities for the bond program. The middle school pools were shut down for several years following the 2008 financial crisis to save on operational expenses. The high school pools have remained active throughout but needed some investment due to deferred maintenance. Counsilman-Hunsaker presented areas where each facility could be improved, brought up to code and industry standards, and evaluated several updates through a sustainability and operational cost lens.
An analysis of the current high-rate sand filter systems and new regenerative media filtration systems was presented along with first-dollar cost estimates and second-dollar operational savings. Additionally, water consumption was analyzed as well as heating, utility, and chemical consumption. Finally, each pool’s structure, finishes, and mechanical equipment were reviewed, with much of the facilities’ equipment recommended to be replaced due to their current age.
