VIEW ALL PROJECTS

In 2018, the North Slope Borough School District commissioned the team of Counsilman-Hunsaker and Burkhart Croft Architects to provide a facility audit for the Barrow High School Pool. The school district commissioned this audit to identify substandard items, not to current Alaska Department of Education and Department of Environmental Health swimming pool requirements, or not operating as designed. New swimming pool technology was discussed to address current challenges experienced in relation to operating the pools. The goal of the audit was to assist in defining a course of action regarding the future of the pools. In addition, this audit prioritized recommended repairs that will bring the pools up to current swimming pool health codes and industry design standards.

Completed in 2021, the renovation includes replacement of the cartridge filter system, recirculation pump, replaced sanitation and pH buffer systems, piping in the mechanical room, pool liner, and deck items such as the pool cover and pool lift.

In 2013, Counsilman-Hunsaker evaluated the existing 750 sq. ft., two-lane lap pool and its mechanical systems at Tikigaq High School. The mechanical equipment was facing physical obsolescence and needed to be replaced. It was found that the pool and mechanical system at the facility had significant issues that needed to be addressed.

In 2019, the Borough retained Counsilman-Hunsaker and Burkhart Croft Architects for renovation services for a major facility renovation and gymnasium addition. The project completed in four phases to allow for continued use of the school throughout construction – site work, gym addition, and two phases of major renovation.

Completed in 2019, the project included design and construction administration services for the renovation of the pool and pool systems including a new pool heat exchanger and ventilation and dehumidification systems. Pool renovations included replacement of the cartridge filter system, recirculation pump, replaced sanitation and pH buffer systems, piping in the mechanical room, pool liner, and deck items such as the pool cover and pool lift.

Renovations also included the existing 63,000 sq. ft. school, a new 1,300 sq. ft. mechanical/generator building, a 24,200 sq. ft. gymnasium addition, and a new 2,430 sq. ft. maintenance building.
