In 2013, the team of Architects Alaska and Counsilman-Hunsaker were retained to complete a swimming pool assessment and feasibility study for Matanuska-Susitna Borough’s Wasilla and Palmer pools. The assessment included determining what repairs were needed to bring the facilities up to current codes and standards, as well as looking for opportunities to increase the recreation value of each facility. Options ranged from making the needed repairs to completely replacing and expanding the aquatic areas. The study calls out multiple options for both pools. The study evaluated the initial capital investment, as well as the long-term operational impact these improvements would create. In October 2016, Matanuska-Susitna Borough voters approved a bond package that included $12,830,900 for improvements to both Palmer and Wasilla Pools, scheduled to be completed in two phases.
