August 2022 marked a momentous occasion for Southwest Independent School District (SWISD) as they proudly unveiled their new $24 million aquatic center. This remarkable two-story facility, spanning an impressive 35,000 square feet, serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between SWISD and the city of San Antonio. The Southwest ISD Aquatics Program is thrilled to enhance the experiences of its swimming, diving, and water polo teams, while also offering a range of programs such as swim lessons, community swim, and athletic competitions.
A Facility for All
Although the primary goal of this project was to provide SWISD student athletes with a top-tier pool and competition space, the aquatics center offers numerous advantages for others within the district and the wider southern San Antonio community. It serves as a symbol of unity and the power of partnerships.
World-Class Amenities
At the heart of the aquatic center lies the world-class 50-meter competition pool, constructed using innovative Myrtha modular stainless steel and PVC technology. This pool boasts eight 50-meter competition lanes, as well as twenty-three 25-yard cross-course lanes, offering ample space for swimming and diving activities. The pool's versatile design can be adjusted to accommodate water polo practices and competitions. Two movable bulkheads, measuring 4 feet and 6 feet respectively, further enhance the pool's flexibility.
Diving enthusiasts will be thrilled to find two 1-meter diving boards and one 3-meter diving board, providing opportunities for athletes to showcase their skills. With a depth profile ranging from 7 to 13 feet, the pool ensures a challenging environment for competitive swimmers. The integrated competition timing systems, complete with LED displays, guarantee accurate and efficient timing during events. Additionally, a diving harness and customized starting blocks featuring the district logo and the state outline with a pinpoint of location add a touch of personalization to the facility.
Teaching Pool and Additional Amenities
In addition to the primary competition pool, the Southwest ISD aquatic center offers a 2,300 square feet teaching pool. This pool includes four 25-yard lap lanes, allowing for learn-to-swim programs and fitness/wellness activities. With ramp and stair entry options, accessibility is a priority, ensuring that individuals of all abilities can enjoy the benefits of swimming.
The aquatics center's attention to detail extends to the amenities it provides. Underwater bench seating offers a convenient resting spot for swimmers, while also serving as a space for relaxation and observation during events.
Community Impact
The grand opening of the Southwest ISD Aquatic Center represents a significant milestone not only for the school district but also for the entire community. This state-of-the-art facility will inspire and empower students, providing them with an exceptional environment to develop their athletic abilities. Additionally, the availability of swim lessons and community swim programs will foster a love for swimming among residents of all ages.
Southwest ISD's aquatic center stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to excellence. With its world-class amenities, inclusive design, and dedication to community engagement, this facility will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the lives of SWISD students and the residents of southern San Antonio. The grand opening of the aquatic center is not only a cause for celebration but also a catalyst for continued growth and success within the district.
