Counsilman–Hunsaker was retained by the City of Opelika, Alabama to study the facilitation for future aquatic facility additions at the Covington Recreation Center outdoor swimming pool, and an outdoor aquatics area at the Opelika Sportsplex.
Opelika has a long history of supporting a variety of aquatic programs through the Covington Swimming Pool and the Opelika Sportsplex, which opened in August 2009. These pools accommodate both seasonal and year-round aquatic opportunities for the Opelika community.
The initial program consists of a new outdoor swimming pool at Covington Recreation Center to replace the existing pool: a 4,000 square foot pool with two, 25-yard lap lanes, zero-depth entry and children’s play feature, a waterslide, open recreational water, and a separate 1,200 square foot spraypad.
A new outdoor “stretch 50-meter” lap pool with 20 to 24 25-yard lanes and 8, 50-meter lanes has been proposed for the Sportsplex with a separate children’s spraypark that contains an elevated children’s play feature on a wet deck. Capital costs were developed for the various options and a customized revenue and expense budget was projected for both aquatic facilities.
