The Thurgood Marshall Middle School swimming pool presents an impressive sight with its expansive 6-lane, 25-yard layout, serving as the hub for physical education classes. While not a conventional venue for swimming competitions, this pool has gained recognition for hosting competitive events catered specifically to the school's robotics team.

Upon closer inspection, it became evident that the pool shell bore the marks of its age, riddled with multiple cracks that hinted at its wear and tear. Over time, several attempts were made to rectify the situation, including underwater repairs executed by a skilled SCUBA diver. While these interventions alleviated some water loss, they failed to achieve an impervious pool shell. A telltale sign of settlement, the unevenness of the pool gutter explained the recurrent appearance of cracks in the shell. In addressing this issue, deliberation centered around potentially implementing a PVC liner to enhance the pool's structural integrity.

In addition to the structural concerns, it was discovered that various aspects of the pool failed to meet the stringent standards set forth by the administrative code. Instances of non-compliance encompassed the absence of proper depth markers and warning signs, discrepancies related to main drains and adherence to the VGB Pool and Spa Safety Act, and shortcomings in terms of ADA accessibility.

Further examination of the facilities revealed a surge tank that exhibited signs of deterioration, plagued by corrosive damage and a size that proved inadequate for the demands of this pool. Consequently, it was recommended that a new surge tank be installed, aligning with the specifications mandated by the administrative code.

The recirculation pump, essential for maintaining proper water flow, fell short of meeting the required flow rate to achieve a comprehensive six-hour turnover. To rectify this deficiency, a proposal was proposed to incorporate a variable frequency drive in conjunction with the existing or potentially new pump, ensuring the desired flow rate would be consistently achieved.

It was advised to implement an automatic water chemistry controller and automated chemical feed systems to enhance the pool’s water chemistry management. These technological additions would effectively regulate the chlorine and pH levels, promoting optimal water balance and ensuring a safe and enjoyable swimming environment.
