Moriah Central School District engaged Counsilman-Hunsaker to conduct a comprehensive conditions assessment of their indoor six-lane, 25-yard competition pool. Originally constructed in the late 1960s, the pool and natatorium underwent renovation in 2011, focusing on the building’s exterior, lighting, and interior finishes. However, due to evolving regulations since its initial construction, the starting blocks were relocated to the deep end, and the diving board was removed due to inadequate water depths.
The pool serves as a key facility for local high school competitions and is an essential resource for the surrounding community, given the scarcity of swimming pools in this remote area of New York. Therefore, maintaining its peak performance was a critical priority for the school district. A major concern was the water loss from the pool system. During the assessment, Counsilman-Hunsaker identified a bulged tile section beneath the deck, where the supply converter connects to the stainless-steel gutter. It is believed that pressure and inadequate support at this junction have contributed to the leak.
In addition to the conditions assessment report, Counsilman-Hunsaker provided a detailed cost estimate for short, medium, and long-term repairs and replacements. The firm also proposed an option to renovate the pool using the Myrtha RenovAction system and offered a life-cycle analysis comparing high-rate sand filtration with regenerative media filtration.
