In 2019, Counsilman-Hunsaker was engaged by the City of Cape Girardeau and the Cape Girardeau Public School District to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to enhance aquatic facilities within the city. The study aimed to identify the most effective approach to meet the aquatic needs of local user groups, considering options such as a unified facility, two separate facilities, or a combination of renovating the existing Central Pool and constructing a new leisure pool.
Following the completion of the study and the receipt of its recommendations, the Cape Girardeau Public School District and the City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department collaborated in the development of the new Jefferson Community Center/Aquatics Center, situated on the Jefferson School campus. This collaborative effort was aimed at providing a facility that caters to the needs of students, staff, and the local community alike. The project required an investment of approximately $11 million and took more than a year and a half to complete.
The aquatic center offers a diverse range of amenities and programs to meet the varied interests and preferences of its patrons. The centerpiece of the facility is an impressive 3,575 sq. ft. indoor leisure pool boasting a capacity of 85,000 gallons. This pool features three 25-yard lap lanes, catering to both exercise enthusiasts and competitive swimmers. Additionally, the aquatic center includes an enclosed slide that extends outside the building before bringing riders back indoors, adding an element of excitement to the facility. Furthermore, a dedicated children's play area with zero depth entry, sprinkle play features and a little clownfish slide has been incorporated, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for younger visitors.
The facility is committed to providing a wide range of programs, including swimming lessons, fitness programs, scuba diving lessons, and hosting birthday parties. The facility's design and amenities are intended to foster community engagement, promote physical fitness, and create a welcoming environment for all individuals seeking aquatic activities in Cape Girardeau.
