The Edmonton Civic Precinct encompasses Sir Winston Churchill Square; Centennial Plaza south of the Stanley A. Milner Library; and the City Hall Plaza. The Civic Precinct is a safe, family-friendly, vibrant, and lively urban plaza in the heart of Edmonton's downtown. This public gathering space welcomes more than one million people a year who participate in programs, events, and festivals.
Project Amenities
The Civic Precinct and City Hall Fountain are important spaces to Edmontonians and visitors. Rehabilitation of this space was necessary to maintain operations of the ice surface and fountain for people to enjoy. The layout and function of the space remained the same with improvements to safety and accessibility.
Work on the plaza, formally known as the civic precinct, began in the summer of 2018 to replace the worn 25-year-old fountain and wading pool and bring it in line with Alberta Health Services standards. This included making the space fully accessible without any stairs, providing easier access to Churchill Square, and incorporating the ability to drain the granite-lined pool in one hour to not allow it to sit unmonitored while full of water overnight. This is done through a 250,000-litre tank that treats the water onsite and can then be recirculated through the 420 jets streaming water into the sky.
The $13 million makeover for the city’s iconic fountain included resurfacing the 10,300 sq. ft. fountain pool and surrounding deck. The water depth was reduced from 40 cm to 15 cm (six inches).
