Initially constructed in 1938 during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration, Crystal Beach Swimming Pool stands as a treasured national landmark. Known for its iconic semi-circular “seashore” design, the pool was a marvel of its time, sloping from ankle-deep to 8 feet and featuring a waterslide. It has been a beloved gathering place for decades, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors annually.
The pool underwent a significant renovation in 2006; however, by 2020, it began experiencing severe issues that threatened its usability. The city retained Counsilman-Hunsaker to assess the pool's condition and provide recommendations. The audit revealed numerous challenges, including non-compliance with Indiana Health Code and ADA accessibility standards, significant water loss, flow rate problems, an aging liner, structural damage, and failed filtration lines.
Based on the findings, the project scope expanded from repairs to a complete pool replacement, ensuring the preservation of the pool’s historical charm while addressing modern accessibility and functionality needs. Guided by the vision of maintaining the "seashore" aesthetic, plans for the new Crystal Beach Aquatic Park incorporated features to serve individuals of all abilities.
In January 2021, the project received a $2 million Community Development Block Grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. With additional support from the city and its partners, demolition began in late 2022. By May 2024, the revitalized 36,600-square-foot aquatic center, including a 14,000-square-foot pool, was completed, offering an inclusive and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.
The Crystal Beach Pool contributes to the historic significance of the Madison Historic District, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark.
