The new 125,000 sq. ft. Recreation and Wellness Center sits on the site of the recently demolished Todd and Dupree buildings. The new facility would not have been possible if not for the 2014-15 EKU Student Senate, which overwhelmingly approved a student fee that is also financing the Powell Building renovations and a pedestrian overpass across the Eastern Bypass near the Alumni Coliseum.
The Rec Center includes a recreation pool, three side-by-side basketball courts encircled by a running track, a large climbing wall and bouldering area, a multi-use gym area for indoor soccer and other sports, a large cardio and strength area across two floors, three racquetball courts, several activity and classroom spaces for various types of activities such as dance and yoga, an elevated outdoor terrace for classes and activities, and cardio, strength, and functional training areas.
Sustainability was a primary focus during planning and design of the new recreation center. Natural daylight, water conservation measures, and energy efficient building systems all put this project on track to achieve LEED Silver Certification upon completion.
