Illinois State University retained Counsilman-Hunsaker, in association with Farnsworth Group, to perform an aquatic assessment of the Metcalf Laboratory School’s swimming pool and associated support infrastructure and program spaces. Constructed in 1955, the pool underwent a basin repair project in 2000 to address voids under the basin and reseal the pool construction (perimeter and lateral) joints. The swimming pool has been closed since July 2014 due to a significant amount of water leaking from the pool. Inspection efforts with a drain line camera indicate severe corrosion and blockages in the pool drain system, which has received no work since its original construction.
Counsilman-Hunsaker performed a thorough investigation of the existing pool recirculation system, water treatment system, and pool structural condition utilizing interviews with facility maintenance staff and non-destructive review techniques. Upon completion of the investigation, a report outlining the current condition, required code and IDPH upgrades, and Counsilman-Hunsaker’s recommendations was provided, along with cost estimates for each recommendation.
