Embarking on a transformative journey in September 2021, the City of Chula Vista ushered in a new era by demolishing its aging 40-year-old community center to create an innovative recreation and aquatic center. Emerging as one of the most bustling recreational hubs in Chula Vista, the center now welcomes approximately 2,000 visitors annually.
The three-phase construction project turned the building into a new 20,000 sq. ft. recreation center with a multipurpose gymnasium, hard courts, restrooms, staff offices (including lifeguards), and many rooms designated for crafts, fitness, and games. Its new design follows a larger, open-space concept for outdoor recreation and creates seamless indoor and outdoor connections, such as giving the multipurpose room large sliding doors.
Additionally, the pool was replaced with a 47,175 sq. ft. aquatics area featuring a recreation pool, a separate 50-meter competition pool, a splash pad (water feature), and a classroom/party room. The new recreation pool is ideal for swim lessons and water play, while the competition pool is fully equipped to host swim and water polo competitions and lap swimming. The splash pad is located within a safety fence adjacent to the pool for water play. The classroom/party room has large overhead doors facing the pool area for maximum flexibility and indoor/outdoor functionality.
