A new recreation center to serve the communities of North Mecklenburg County has been a priority for the region for decades. After three separate votes, funding was approved for a feasibility study and initial design concepts. The county commissioned a consulting team to develop a master plan for the 41.4-acre site. The team engaged stakeholders and community members in a comprehensive public engagement process and produced some initial concepts for the future facility.
The innovative Northern Regional Recreation Center seamlessly integrates all the core objectives of the park and recreation initiative, focusing on fostering health and wellness, promoting conservation, and ensuring social equity. This state-of-the-art facility is poised to offer a comprehensive array of accessible recreational services, engaging activities, and top-notch amenities. Celebrating its grand opening in June 2022, the 85,000 sq. ft. Northern Regional Recreation Center facility includes indoor aquatics, sports courts, a fitness center, an indoor track, multi-use event rooms, a catering kitchen, child watch areas, and classrooms. The facility will help provide services for health and wellness, conservation, and social equity at one site for the first time in North Mecklenburg.
