Unveiled in December 2023, the Holt Hickman Outdoor Pool at Southern Methodist University (SMU) significantly enhances the university's athletic resources. It features a state-of-the-art outdoor competition pool designed to meet the rigorous demands of competitive swimming and diving. This 25,550 sq. ft. premier facility showcases SMU’s commitment to excellence, incorporating advanced technology and meticulous design to support high-performance training and competition. Every detail of the pool has been thoughtfully considered to ensure optimal conditions for swimmers and divers, enhancing both practice sessions and competitive events.
To beat the Texas heat, a decorative overhang offers ample shade, and the expansive deck space provides ample room for athletes, coaches, and officials during meets, fostering a collaborative environment.
The pool's surroundings are designed to create an inviting atmosphere for spectators and participants alike. Thoughtfully arranged seating offers excellent visibility of the entire pool, ensuring an engaging experience for fans during competitions. Landscaping and shaded areas enhance the overall aesthetic and comfort, making it a welcoming venue for training as well as local, regional, and national events. The integration of these elements not only boosts the facility's functionality but also elevates the spectator experience.
The outdoor pool completes the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center, positioning SMU as one of the few universities nationwide with both indoor and outdoor Olympic-sized pools within a single facility. This addition is set to become a hub of community engagement, attracting local and national swimming and water polo events to SMU and the city of Dallas. By providing such a comprehensive aquatic facility, SMU continues solidifying its reputation as a leader in collegiate athletics and community involvement.
CHALLENGES
The outdoor pool faced significant site constraints due to the limited footprint behind the existing Lindley Aquatic Center. Innovative design solutions were necessary to accommodate a 50-meter pool, multiple diving boards, and a second instructional pool while also ensuring adequate space for circulation, seating, and pool equipment. Ensuring a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor pools was crucial to maximizing the functionality and flexibility of training programs.
