Counsilman-Hunsaker was commissioned by Spring Lake Public Schools to conduct an audit of their aquatic facility. This facility comprises an indoor competition pool, recreation pool, and spa. The primary objective of the assessment was to scrutinize the pool tile, which had suffered from extensive grout deterioration since its installation about 15 years ago. The school district was presented with remedial options to consider for the upcoming bond proposal.
During the assessment, various other existing conditions were identified that require attention. These include deteriorated finishes in the pool mechanical room due to chemical off-gassing, damaged access hatches to the surge tanks, as well as damaged and broken gutter grating in both pools. Backwashing the existing sand filters presented challenges, and there was corrosion within one of the recirculation pumps and strainers. The timing system was outdated, and the UV systems were not operational. Replacing the main drain covers was also recommended to ensure compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. Furthermore, additional accessibility means are necessary to meet ADA requirements. Finally, recommendations were made for pH control alternatives at the request of the operational staff. An opinion was provided on the probable construction cost for the recommended repairs, as well as additional equipment costs for future replacement budgeting at Spring Lake High School.
