The original Summit Waves Aquatic Center opened in 2008 and has provided over a decade of aquatic recreation and leisure activity to the residents of Lee’s Summit and the surrounding area. The original construction included a 900 ft. action river, lap pool, elevated waterslides with a plunge pool, children’s zero depth water play area, and a restroom/concessions building. Through proactive planning and budgeting, Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation had a goal to expand the aquatic center program and capacity through addition of a wave pool feature.
In late 2018, Counsilman-Hunsaker was retained to design a new 8,000 sq. ft. wave pool addition for Summit Waves in order to serve the community and address growth, handle aging park infrastructure, and stay current with industry trends. The upgraded facility opened for the 2020 pool season, despite capacity restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this challenge, Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation sold more season passes for the 2020 season than any prior season at Summit Waves, and the wave pool opened to great appreciation from the community, again positioning Summit Waves as the premier municipal aquatic facility in the area.
