The University of Arkansas commissioned Counsilman-Hunsaker to provide a swimming pool assessment for their competition pool at the UREC natatorium located in the HPER Building. Constructed in 1986, the natatorium includes an indoor eight lane, 50-meter competition pool which features a diving well, a 4 ft. - 5 ft. shallow section, and accommodates 25-meter and 50-meter lap swimming.
The pool at the recreation center is managed and used by the general student body, faculty/staff and UREC members. The purpose of the audit was to identify conditions that are substandard in the pool; identify items not to current industry swimming pool design standards or codes; identify equipment that is not functional or not operating as designed; and to assist in defining a course of action regarding any necessary updates, repairs, or modifications to the pool or pool systems. In addition, an opinion of probable construction cost is provided for recommended repairs and/or updates which would serve to improve the operation of the pool and bring the pool up to current industry swimming pool design standards.
Counsilman-Hunsaker visited the facility on October 10, 2018 to observe current conditions. The assessment consisted of reviewing the pool system for deficiencies regarding the Arkansas State Department of Public Health and Environment Swimming Pool Code, Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC), federal law, and current industry standards. A commentary was prepared to inform the university of any necessary repairs, replacement or restoration of the pool systems, including identification of issues requiring further intensive evaluation or analysis. Recommendations were made for renovation or replacement of pool systems including costs for any modifications, replacements and/or additions required.
