After receiving a proposal to renovate the indoor pool at the Student Recreation and Fitness Center, the University of Memphis was concerned with the operational cost of running an indoor competition pool. Counsilman-Hunsaker was retained to provide an operational analysis that would compare the current cost of operation to that of the proposed renovation. The analysis would also determine a percentage of usage by user group to assist the university in allocating fees. The university used this information to decide whether to renovate or replace the pool.
In May 2019, the university held a groundbreaking for the $12 million Mike Rose Aquatics Center in partnership with Memphis Tiger Swimming, Splash Mid-South, the YMCA, and the Rose Foundation. The project completely replaces the existing pool in the Student Recreation and Sports Complex. It complements the new wellness center with a deeper and longer pool that is more conducive to lap swimming and competition training. Additionally, spectator seating in the pool area was expanded, and the roof for the entire facility was replaced with other critical mechanical systems revamped and upgraded.
The competition pool is a state-of-the-art aquatic facility designed to meet the needs of competitive swimmers, fitness/wellness users, and recreational swimmers alike. The pool reconstruction utilized proprietary Myrtha Pools technology known for its precision, durability, versatility, and exceptional performance.
The pool mechanical systems were engineered for energy efficiency and ease of operation, utilizing UV secondary disinfection and a building boiler loop heating system fully integrated with the existing building automation system.
