In 2018, Watauga County commissioned Counsilman-Hunsaker to provide an in-depth study for their upcoming recreation and aquatic center. The study included potential revenue and possible expenses for their preferred concept, affording the county a better understanding of how to move forward with a new recreation and aquatic facility.
Pleased from the results of the study, the County proceeded with construction, and the new recreation center opened in the fall of 2020, offering key benefits to Watauga County citizens. It will also be an economic driver as the facility hosts tournaments, swim meets, and other events for the community.
The recreation center features a wide variety of spaces, including a competition pool and leisure pool, four full-size gymnasiums, a multipurpose studio, events classroom, fitness center with weight and exercise rooms, two birthday party rooms, and a suspended track. Visitors are met with a double-level glazed lobby and monumental staircase that leads to the fitness center and a suspended running track on the upper level.
