The Lake County Swimming Pool is one of Leadville’s premier recreation facilities and the only public lap swimming pool serving the area. It remains popular among extreme athletes, triathletes, and swimmers due to the pool's elevation of over 10,000 ft. With six 25-yard lap lanes, a dry sauna, a hot tub, an AquaClimb climbing wall, a diving board, and a small shallow play area, the pool is utilized by several different demographics.
In 2020, Counsilman-Hunsaker completed an aquatic assessment of the pool and mechanical systems, made recommendations for improvement, presented a timeline for improvements, and presented an opinion of probable costs to complete the work. Five options for renovation and new construction were also offered:
- Option 1 – Renovation
- Option 2 – Replacement of Pool and Spa
- Option 3 – Reconfigure Pool, Spa, & Locker Rooms
- Option 4 – Reconfigure Pool, Spa, Locker Rooms, AND Add Recreation Pool
- Option 5 – New Aquatic Center Including Lap Pool, Recreation Pool, & Spa
In 2023, Counsilman-Hunsaker was hired by Hord Coplan Macht Architecture to assess and re-verify that the existing pool and pool equipment required replacement. Due to a compromised liner, an aging aluminum structure, a flooded pool pump pit, and aging pool mechanical equipment, it was concluded that the pool requires a complete replacement and cannot be used in any further capacity.
