The team of Counsilman-Hunsaker and Brinkley Sargent Architects was retained by the City of Irving, located in Dallas County, to create the new West Irving Aquatic Center which was completed in June 2010. The facility offers more than 10,000 sq. ft. of water attractions.
Features included both recreational and fitness amenities. One unique feature of the facility was the elevation of the lap pool above the leisure pool which spills over as a waterfall along one entire edge and across a relaxing wet deck below. A rock climbing wall was also installed, extending 8 ft. above the water and offering an exciting climb to the top.
By debuting cutting edge attractions and entertainment amenities, the City of Irving was able to stay at the forefront of the aquatic industry, giving guests a reason to visit time and time again. The facility has been a mega-hit with children and families in Irving.
In 2022, the City of Irving commissioned Counsilman-Hunsaker to provide a swimming pool assessment for the Lee Park and Lively Park Outdoor Swimming Pools. Lee Park Swimming Pool was constructed in 1964, while Lively Park (originally Salvation Army Park) was built in 1959.
The swimming pool assessment identified items that were substandard in the pools, items not to current industry swimming pool design standards or equipment not operating as designed, and assisted in defining a course of action regarding the future of the aquatic facility. The findings were presented to Irving's project steering committee and the Parks and Recreation Board and detailed the results of the assessments and the associated costs to maintain the pools in operation.
