The new East Central High School natatorium for Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools was designed to host regional swimming and diving competitions as well as community recreation. Located at the east end of campus is a gateway for the high school and the attached Sunman-Dearborn Middle School.
This 28,000 sq. ft. natatorium features a unique 'tech wave' design within the exterior form and repeated in plan/patterning at the interior. The new East Central High School pool is an eight lane stretch 25-yard pool, with an 8 ft. wide bulkhead between swimming and diving. Seating for 500 on retractable bleachers is stacked on a mezzanine over four locker rooms, coaches’ offices, and hospitality suite.
Interior finishes include wood laminated roof deck, highlighted by suspended indirect lighting, and school-branded glass and porcelain tile. The spectator experience is enhanced through generously sized lobby with built-in wood benches and floating monumental stair to the mezzanine. The natatorium will be used by middle school and high school students, as well as the community.
