Counsilman-Hunsaker was commissioned by New York University to provide a swimming pool audit for the existing competition pool at the Palladium. The facility was originally designed in the late 1990s by Counsilman-Hunsaker and has recently experienced some challenges with the indoor air quality and heavy concentrations of chloramines off-gassed from the pool due in largepart to the usage that the pool experiences between the varsity athletic teams and the student body.
Following the assessment, New York University enacted on some of the engineering Recommendations, including the addition of a medium pressure UV system to control the chloramine levels in the natatorium, as well as HVAC modifications to pull more return air from the water surface and the breathing zone.
In addition to the chloramine challenges, there are several other components with the swimming pool and its mechanical and chemical treatment systems that are in need to repair or replacement now that the facility is nearly 20 years old and plans for expected life and opinions of cost were provided to allow for the university to budget for this work in the coming years.
