West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind enlisted Counsilman-Hunsaker to assess their existing pool in Romney, West Virginia, specifically evaluating its current condition for potential future renovations. The pool had been non-operational for over a year due to water loss issues seemingly stemming from structural concerns. Before its closure, the pool served various school-related aquatic programs, including swim team activities, after-school swims, PE classes, and learn-to-swim programs. Additionally, a nearby high school utilized the pool for swim team practices. The audit primarily concentrated on identifying necessary renovations to facilitate the pool's restart and exploring potential solutions to address structural issues for water tightness upon reopening.
The assessment report highlighted several findings and offered recommendations, prioritizing actions for immediate attention and those requiring consideration over the next 5-10 years. Two proposed approaches to renovate the pool shell and finishes were presented: a conventional renovation approach and a Myrtha Renovaction approach. Additional recommendations encompassed improvements to the recirculation system, ADA upgrades, replacement of certain deck equipment, and partial deck tile replacement. An opinion of probable costs was also provided for all recommended actions.
